My deepest sympathies for your family's loss. I'm sure you're aware that the passing of Coach Roman is a great loss for all of us who knew him. My first experience with Coach was as a linebacker on the SPASH sophomore football team. Coach had taken me out of the game for a rest. As I stood next to him waiting to be put back into the game, he bellowed out "Pieczynski! Will you hit somebody out there?!" I tapped him on the shoulder and said "Coach, I'm right here. " He turned to look at me and said without blinking, "Well, that's just in case you are in there!" Many years later, I would see him after Mass at St. Stephen's and we would always laugh about that story. It always made me feel special that after all those years, and all the teams he coached, and all the players he came across, that he remembered me and that funny story. Later, when I was a physical education student at UWSP, one of my instructors said the best way to learn our craft was to be an assistant coach. I knew exactly who to ask for a volunteer learning experience. Coach graciously let me be an assistant on his sophomore football team. We went undefeated that year and it was one of the best experiences of my life. He was a great mentor, and I learned a lot just watching him. Later, when I became active in coaching youth sports, he was the standard that I set for myself. It was always my goal to try to have an impact on some young player like he impacted me. There are many stories I could tell from either school or football, but there's always one thought that makes me smile, and it's a testament to the competitor he was. It was at practice after a loss the night before. We talked about the game and how difficult it was to lose. He looked at me and said, "you know, losing is worse than dying - because at least when you die, you don't have to get up the next morning.". Rest in Peace Coach. My condolences, Dean Pieczynski

Coach Roman was a great man. I will truly miss him. I have great memories of him coaching us, along with spending time with his family. Coach had the ability to make a man out of a boy. I will be forever grateful for his influence on my life; I know I wouldn’t be the man I am today if it wasn’t for Coach Roman.

I send my heart felt condolences to the Roman family with their great loss. Mr. Roman was my teacher at SPASH for two classes and I know Mrs. Roman from my summer jobs at CAP Services. I hope you are able to celebrate the many ways the George touched the community in his work at the school, as a coach and at church. God's blessings to you all as you say good-bye to your loved one.

Any success I have had in my teaching and coaching career I owe to George Roman. He is the reason I became a teacher and a coach. He was my mentor, my advisor, my friend and a father figure to me.I tried to model myself after Coach but it was a pale comparison to the great "ONE".We are all much better to have had George in our lives! A Loving,caring man of principle and humor. We will all miss you dearly.

GR was my coach at SPASH for 3 years in both football and baseball. He was one of those coaches, where you look back and realize that they weren't just a coach - but a mentor in life. GR has a great heart and truly cared for his students, players, family. God bless you GR for everything you have done for me over those most important 3 years of my life. He was such a force, and so beloved as a teacher, I can only imagine how much he meant to his family and close friends. Mr. Roman challenged me, made me laugh, and he was one of the teachers I will always remember. My condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues -- with a personality as big as Mr. Roman's, losing him doesn't make sense-- it seems like he'll always be there. Please know he'll always live on in the hearts and memories of so many of us.

The Keeffe family of Wausau sends it's deepest sympathies to all of Coach Roman's family. He was a great teacher to my two brothers who played football at Newman. Both on and off the field. He was definitely part of what shaped them into the great men they became. He comes up in this light often in conversation about the great role models we all had as boys becoming men. RIP Coach. You were one of the best.

My prayers and thoughts are with your whole family at this time. What a wonderful teacher, Mr. Roman was. I had him for history in the early 70's at Lincoln High. My grades weren't wonderful, but he always had time to talk about the lesson, or life 'stuff'. He was so funny. And I remember his enthusiasm for sports. He actually remembered me a few years out of high school. I saw him at SPASH after he left Lincoln. We used to talk about Catholicism and other theology. He was truly a teacher that made you feel like you mattered. I'm sure heaven has made a special spot for him.

Two speeding tickets forty five minutes apart (1982) on our way to Ashwaubenon sophmore football game.(Asst.Huebner,Hodgson,Grawey and Flowerette). Getting an earful from Coach when we got back. Then showing him the speeding tickets and getting another earful. This story was told every year there after including to my two sons. Having known Coach Roman wouldn't have been enough for me, Having him as a coach, History teacher, Being one of his assistants and being a parent of one of his student athletes were some of the greatest memories for me, Great man,Great teacher and most of all a great friend ! I will miss you Coach Roman and all of your wonderful stories and lessons. God Speed my friend.

Coach Roman, the Man, the Myth, the Legend. No one else that I have ever known fits this description more than he. His lifetime accomplishments as an athlete, and coach pale in comparison to his influence and impact on the lives of thousands of students and athletes who were blessed to have Coach in their life. Coach did not demand excellence, he demanded commitment and effort, which he wisely knew can bring us to excellence. My life seems like it has been pretty easy since Coach developed my intestinal fortitude and mental toughness. Thanks Coach, you will be missed, but will always be loved!

I remember making a list of bands with unusual names for Mr. Roman, because we were talking about Sputnik in class, and it made me think of a musical group that I really liked. He asked me about other names, and I was able to make a very long list of bands with weird names. It made him laugh, and I still remember the occasion 20+ years later. Thanks, Mr. Roman, for being the kind of guy who sticks in one's memory. You will be missed!
